Covering 513,120 square kilometers (198,120 sq mi), it is home to over 71.7 million people. Thailand shares borders with Myanmar and Laos to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the east, the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia to the south, and the Andaman Sea and Myanmar’s southern tip to the west. Additionally, it has maritime borders with Vietnam in the southeast (Gulf of Thailand) and with Indonesia and India to the southwest (Andaman Sea). The country's capital and largest city is Bangkok. Although Thailand is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy in name, its recent political history has seen several coups and periods of military rule.
